Costa Rica
November 12 - 20, 2017

We have added another trip to Costa Rica for late 2017.  By popular demand, this is a short, relaxed trip, featuring 3-day visits to 2 of the country’s premier natural areas, Monteverde and Arenal.  It’s an ideal trip for those making their first natural history trip to the American tropics, but it’s also well suited for those who already know and love the birds, wildlife, scenery, and hospitality experienced in Costa Rica.

This trip is timed for the end of the rainy season, when fruits are abundant and birds are especially active, and migrants from the north are arriving.  It’s also a slow season for tourism, so crowds are smaller and prices are lower.  This has allowed us to plan a trip with more luxurious accommodations than is usual for our trips -- you’ll love the places we stay at Monteverde and at Arenal.

Top right: Passerini’s Tanager.  Above: White-fronted Parrot.  Right: Stripe-breasted Wren.  Below: Slaty-tailed Trogon.

Top: Common Tody-Flycatcher. Above: White-throated Crake.  Left: Laughing Falcon.  Below left: Guides Carlos “Charlie” Gómez and Marco “Niño” Morales.  Below right: Summer Tanager.  Bottom: Arenal Volcano.

To ensure a truly exceptional experience, this trip is limited to just 10 travelers, guided by an experienced leadership team of three.  Mark Garland, veteran nature tour leader based in Cape May, NJ, teams with Costa Rican naturalist guide Carlos “Charlie” Gómez.  Driver Marco “Niño” Morales not only gets us to our destinations safely, he’s also a skilled naturalist who gives us a third guide in the field.  We’ll search for birds each day, but we will take time to enjoy other wildlife, interesting plants, and the amazing ecological stories of the American tropics.

Each day will feature several field walks.  Join the leaders for them all, or skip a few to relax and enjoy our exceptional surroundings.  Cost of the trip is $3150 per person, double occupancy, not including air travel to and from San José, Costa Rica.  For the full itinerary and registration information please send an e-mail message to  You can also send a message if you have any questions.
