Green Jays are common in the Rio Grande Valley.

The Rio Grande rolls gently through “The Valley.”

Even when rare birds don’t show up, the Rio Grande Valley always delights visiting naturalists.  There are always plenty of interesting birds to watch, plus reptiles, butterflies, wildflowers, and more.  I was lucky to have been invited to help lead field trips at the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival, one of the most delightful birding events I’ve ever attended.  Field trips head out every day in search of the region’s characteristic birds, and the other elements of natural history are never forgotten.  There’s a trade show where tour companies, nature lodges, optics companies, and other bird-related businesses showcase their wares.  Daily speakers offer inspiring presentations.  The Festival is a delight for those making their first visit to the Rio Grande Valley and for those who have been many times.
